Dangers of Sugar Intake

As I was researching this article,

I surfed the web and was surprised to find that the majority of the websites that mention sugar say that it is fine to eat in moderation. Most of them say that your body turns all food to glucose regardless of the kind of food eaten, so whether you eat sugar, vegetables, or steak is irrelevant. I was shocked that the health care professionals who wrote these pages could be so short-sighted.


First of all, it is true that your body converts all foods to glucose. However, there is an important difference between sugar and those other foods.....meat, fruits, and vegetables all have vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids. Sugar has none of those things to assist in its digestion, assimilation, and absorption. As a result, metabolizing refined sugar puts the body at a severe nutritional disadvantage.


Here are some studies that have been done on sugar and its effects. I don't know how those health care professionals can say that sugar is ok after reading these studies. This is information that has been around for some time, too, and should be well known.


First of all, in 1973 the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study by A. Sanchez et al, "Role of sugars in human neutrophilic phagocytosis", November, 1180-1184, showing that ingesting 100 grams of simple sugar lowers white blood cell activity for up to five hours. He got this result using processed honey, table sugar, and processed orange juice. This translates into a 50% reduction in the ability of white blood cells to engulf bacteria. The immune suppressing effect begins within ten minutes of ingesting the sugar.


Lowered white blood cell activity means your
immune system and it's ability to fight infection, is impaired.


The general public believes that the orange juice they buy at the store is healthy....however, once the fresh squeezed juice has been pasteurized, it no longer has any live enzymes, and the vitamin and mineral content has been greatly reduced. In essence, the processing of the juice renders it the same as refined white sugar, because it does not contain the lifegiving substances which help the natural sugar to be metabolized.


Honey would give the same result unless it is raw, UNHEATED honey. This means that in the processing of the honey, the temperature cannot exceed 96 degrees fahrenheit, or the live enzymes in the honey will be destroyed as well.


Since most people do not drink fresh squeezed orange juice, or go to the trouble to make sure their honey is unheated during processing, they are feeding their bodies pure sugar without knowing it.


Now think about the amount of sugars that the average person gets in their daily diet.....it's no wonder that so many people are sick these days. Their immune systems are constantly operating below their optimum levels.


Again, in 1976 a study was published in the journal Dental Survey. In this study, J.R. Ringsdorf found that drinking 24 ounces of cola depressed the activity of a kind of white blood cell call a neutrophil that eats bacteria. He found that this reduction in activity lasted for at least five hours. Another good study was in 1977 by J. Bernstein et al. called Depression of lymphocyte transformation following oral glucose ingestion, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Volume 30, page 613.


In 1991, T.W. Jones et al. published an article called Independent effects of youth and poor diabetes control on responses to hypoglycemia in children. It was published in Diabetes, Volume 40, pages 358-63. These researchers found that sugar increases adrenalin, a stimulating hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. It was also found that this adrenalin increase was far more pronounced in children than in adults, which might account for why children often have hyperactivity problems when their diet contains refined sugars.


When sugar is constantly in the diet, the pancreas must constantly produce insulin. When sugar is continually overused, the pancreas eventually wears out and is no longer able to clear sugar from the blood, and diabetes is often the result. This tendency toward diabetes rises severely after menopause. Also, for some people, they have enough insulin but the cells have become insulin-resistant, so they do no absorb the insulin to facilitate absoption of glucose.


Sugar also increases the urinary output of essential vitamins and minerals. According to L. K. Massey in Acute effects of dietary caffeine and sucrose on urinary mineral excretion in healthy adolescents Nutr. Res 8(9): 1988, calcium loss through the urine doubles when a soft drink containing sugar is consumed. Cola drinks containing both caffeine and sugar caused the greatest calcium and bone loss in these subjects.


White, refined sugar is also bleached with Chlorine Bleach, a substance that many people are sensitive to. Chlorine, when it combines with organic compounds, converts to Dioxin, a lethal chemical. No one should ever consume any substances that have been exposed to chlorine or chlorine bleach, nor use paper products that have been bleached.


Some of the other effects of sugar on the body are:


*Increases overgrowth of candida yeast organism
*Increases chronic fatigue
*Can trigger binge eating in those with bulima
*Increases PMS symptoms
*Increases hyperactivity in about 50% of children
*Increases tooth decay
*Increases anxiety and irritability
*Can increase or intensify symptoms of anxiety and panic in susceptible women
*Can make it difficult to lose weight because of constantly high insulin levels, which causes the body to store excess carbs as fat.


Sugar is easily replaced in the diet by an herb called stevia. The whole herb or the liquid or powdered extract can be used. This herb is 200 times more sweet than sugar, but it has NO CALORIES, and does NOT raise blood sugar. It was introduced to Europe by the Spanish Conquistidors in the 16th century, and was used extensively in Europe for decades with no known side effects, before it was outlawed by the EU. It has been used for hundreds of years in Brazil. It is a truly natural dietary supplement. It can be used in hot or cold foods, and can be cooked with. It has no aftertaste, and is non-carcinogenic. It is a lifesaver for diabetics, for it helps regulate blood sugar.


I hope you will choose to increase your family's level of health by not using sugar, and not supporting the sugar industry by buying sugar or products containing sugar.

The causes of adult-onset diabetes

In parts 1 and 2 of this article series,

we talked about how dietary sugars (white flour, corn syrup, table sugar, etc.) alter blood sugar levels and how the body tries to regulate blood sugar through glycogen storage, insulin secretion and body fat creation.



In this third and final part, we're exploring the causes of adult-onset diabetes and how people can both prevent and even reverse diabetes by applying fundamental knowledge of how the human body deals with dietary sugars and refined carbohydrates.


This process of storing sugar as glycogen or converting it to body fat is initiated by a hormone produced by the pancreas. This hormone, of course, is called insulin. If you consume refined carbohydrates on a regular basis, your pancreas will become overstressed. It's just like if you run your car 24 hours a day and keep revving the engine -- eventually something's going to wear out and break. This is what happens with the pancreas, and people who have adult onset diabetes often have an overstressed pancreas. You could call it a worn-out pancreas, although technically that's not an accurate metaphor.



The other problem is that type 2 diabetics have decreased insulin sensitivity in the cells of their body. That means that even though insulin is being produced and circulating through the bloodstream, the cells in the body aren't responding to it.


That's why reduced insulin sensitivity is a physiological marker that indicates a person is about to become diabetic. If your insulin sensitivity is reduced, you are on the track to diabetes. In the medical community this is called pre-diabetes. And once again, it is not a genetic disorder -- it is something that is directly caused by the foods you choose to consume and the level of physical activity you choose to pursue.


If you are pre-diabetic, that means you have reduced insulin sensitivity but haven't yet been diagnosed with full-blown adult onset type 2 diabetes. In most cases, you can directly reverse this condition and return to a healthy metabolic state by making new choices in your foods and physical exercise. Remember, diabetes is a disease that is quite easy to reverse if you catch it early enough. And if you're pre-diabetic, you have an opportunity to reverse the situation right now.


Reversing it means making some tough choices in your life. It means, first of all, getting out and engaging in physical exercise on a regular basis. That's 45 minutes a day of walking, or something more strenuous if you can handle it. If you can't walk 45 minutes a day, walk 30 minutes a day. If you can't walk 30 minutes a day, walk 5 minutes a day. If you can't walk 5 minutes a day, just get up out of your chair 3 times -- do something to increase your exercise stamina, and work towards walking 45 minutes a day. Everybody can do something. Sitting around doing nothing is no excuse, and it will directly lead you to full-blown diabetes. (Diabetics are really good at making excuses. I know, I used to be pre-diabetic. I would find every reason in the world to avoid physical exercise.)



The second thing people can do is give up all foods that promote diabetes. This means foods that contain ingredients like refined white sugar, sucrose, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, white flour, enriched flours, and so on.


So that means getting rid of all ice cream, cakes, cookies, sweets, desserts, candy bars, etc. These foods are causing your diabetes. Now, you won't hear this from the American Diabetes Association, because that organization is, to put it bluntly, actually thriving on the skyrocketing trend of diabetes in the United States. I've never found the ADA to actually give beneficial nutritional advice that would help people reverse diabetes. Remember, they are funded in large part by pharmaceutical companies who would actually lose customers if people reversed their diabetic conditions. It's not a conspiracy: it's just plain old corporate greed.



If you want to reverse diabetes, and you want to know the truth about it, keep reading articles like this one, because I'm going to give it to you straight. I'm telling you that you've got a make a list of all the foods and food ingredients to avoid for the rest of your life. And then you must commit to avoiding those foods. No exceptions.



Another side effect of all of this sugar consumption is, of course, rampant weight gain. If you're suffering from obesity (or a very high level of body fat), chances are you got that way by consuming refined carbohydrates. This is why the Atkins diet has been so successful for people who are willing to stick with it. I'm not a huge supporter of the low carb lifestyle as practiced by most Americans, although I do support the avoidance of all processed carbohydrates as recommended by the Atkins program and other low carb dieting systems such as the Hamptons Diet.



Consuming refined carbs and added sugars will put weight on your body faster than any other nutritional strategy. The way to take it off is to avoid these foods for the rest of your life. Here's another interesting point in all of this -- when your body adds fat during this process of converting blood sugar to body fat, it has a blueprint of where to put that fat. For most women, the fat goes on the buttocks and the hips, potentially on the breasts, and eventually under the arms. For men, most of the that weight goes right to the belly, the gut, and only later will it move up to the chest area, the bottom of the neck, and maybe the buttocks and legs as well. The point is, your body has a blueprint of where it is going to store fat, and that blueprint is unique to you. You cannot change this blueprint.


Some people foolishly believe that if they do a bunch of sit-ups, they are going to somehow remove body fat from their abdomen. That's not true at all. Your body decides where to put it on and where to take it off. Other people, who are just as foolish, think that if they go get liposuction, they're going to remove all the body fat from their thighs or their stomach or some other area where it's not cosmetically appealing. But what happens is now they're missing those fat cells that have been ripped out of their torso through liposuction, but they keep on eating the way they've been eating that made them fat in the first place.



They keep on eating all those sweets and ice creams and sugars and other refined carbohydrates. So what happens? Well, the body has to put the fat somewhere, so now all of a sudden, the body is putting this fat in strange places where the fat cells still exist. A woman might end up with massive deposits of fat hanging off of her arms, or the back of her legs and thighs might balloon in size even though her midsection is now apparently much thinner because she doesn't have fat cells there.



Liposuction is one of those surgeries that looks good at first, but if you don't change your lifestyle, you're going to look like some sort of Frankenstein monster in the long run. You're going to have to change your diet sooner or later if you want to look normal again, and if you'd just make the decision to change your diet earlier, you wouldn't need the liposuction surgery in the first place. So, in my book, liposuction is absolutely useless. In fact, it's worse than useless -- it's a dangerous procedure that scars your body and that disrupts the normal fat storage system your body was designed for.

Gregory Grosbard of Miami, Florida received a U.S. patent
on a process to improve the strength of plastic by using sugar.


Each time plastic goes through a heat cycle, it loses strength because oxygen in the atmosphere goes into the material and creates oxygen "holes." Cancer has become the number one "killer disease in children" in the past few years. Sugar consumption is robbing the oxygen out of their little bodies and making their cells extremely acidic while shutting off their immune systems. Sugar averages for children are around 36 teaspoons a day.



The next time you feel like having a soda, just think about this: Colas are extremely acidic with a pH of approximately 2.5. It takes 32 glasses of water with a pH of 10 to neutralize that one cola. Aspartame is 10% wood alcohol

-- which your body metabolizes into various carcinogens! (One of them is DKP--which may cause brain tumors.) Fully three-quarters of all non-drug complaints to the FDA involve aspartame.

FLAXSEED

Wherever flaxseed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health. Mahatma Gandhi Flaxseed is one-third oil, the remainder consisting of fiber, protein and mucilage. In our salad dressing section, we have looked at the magical oil that comes from flax.

Prescriptions are more profitable than telling someone they need to eat more fruit, less junk and drink fresh juice for a few days. Also, most people want the lazy way to heal. Fasting For Spiritual Strengthening

One of Satan’s main tactics is to encourage any addiction or lifestyle that makes the body the master, where man is moved by every little whim of the flesh. Fasting is a powerful discipline for bringing the body under submission. You take total control. It suffers and you say no. A soldier without needs cannot be tempted and will not turn from duty.



Each great servant of God has had his/her time of fasting. It is an essential spiritual discipline and without it we are weak. It fortifies spiritual foundations, builds intimacy with God and strengthens resolve. We can hide behind a lack of confidence, feelings of inadequacy, fear of rejection, and fear of failure, yet we will never be fulfilled until we become courageous. Fasting, prayer and faith give us the courage to move past our fears into the realm of the unknown.
If you are spiritually dry, fasting and prayer will restore that fiery passion you had when you first came to Christ. If you are seeking direction, truth will be revealed. If you are in a spiritual battle, fasting gives the edge for victory. If you have a request before God, there is no position more powerful than fasting in humility and praise. Fasting For Weight Loss
Excess fat is nothing more than extra calories stored in the fat cells. The purpose of fat cells is to be fuel for times of famine. For North America, famine does not exist; instead, the North American diet is a continual indulgence of high-calorie foods, eaten in an attempt to fulfill emotional needs. The fat cells get bigger and the body gets pudgier. Fasting demands the fat cells be used as fuel. As soon as the body needs calories the process or catabolism (tearing down) starts. Each pound of fat has approximately 3,500 calories, which becomes fuel for the body. As each day passes, you get thinner and thinner. I have seen people lose over 50 pounds in 30 days without flabby skin. Natural elasticity and skin tone had been restored. Their friends were in shock as the difference was so amazing. Fasting a Natural Body Function
With great patience, the body waits until we fall asleep to begin its nightly work of cleansing. Breakfast is appropriately named as it is breaking a nightly fast with a morning meal. Upon awakening from this short fast, the tongue is coated, breath foul, skin puffy, and the mind foggy. These are all early symptoms of the body in a state of detoxification. Bacon, eggs, a side order of pancakes, and a cup of coffee is a sure way of halting detoxification. Of course, you feel instantly better, attributing it to a greasy breakfast.



These nightly fasts slow the erosion process and much repair work is done, but the time is too short for serious healing. For that, you need to get serious with detoxification through extended fasting.

Fasting is not Starvation
There is a vast difference between fasting and starving. During the absence of food, the body will systematically cleanse itself of everything except vital tissue. It continually readjusts to make minimum demands on reserves. Starvation will occur only when the body is forced to use vital tissue to survive.


Humans adapt amazingly well to lack of food. A. J. Carlson, Professor of Physiology, at the University of Chicago, states that a healthy, well-nourished man can live from 50 to 75 days without food, provided he is not exposed to harsh elements or emotional stress. There are numerous examples of water fasts over the 75-day mark. Granted, 75-day water fasts are unusual, but it shows that God has wonderfully created the body to be able to live for extended periods without food.


Each extra pound of fat will supply enough calories for one day of hard, physical labor. Ten pounds of fat are equal to 35,000 calories! This is equivalent to 35 pounds of fish or 192 pounds of carrots. We carry around a supermarket of reserves capable of sustaining us for many weeks.
All living things have been given the ability to survive harsh circumstances. Organisms are able to store nutrients in the fat, blood, bone marrow and other tissues. Camels are capable of storing fat and water in their humps. Tadpoles abstain from eating when their legs are developing, subsisting on their tails, which are no longer needed. The Mexican Gila Monster stores up reserves in its tail when food is plentiful and can survive for six weeks when food is scarce. The marine iguana of the Galapagos Islands is named the Vegetarian Dragon because it lives on seaweed. It can abstain from food for over one hundred days. In the Western World, food is plentiful and rich in calories. Unless involved in strenuous exercise or famine, we do not have the opportunity to use up the excessive fat deposited around the waistline.



It will take several weeks of catabolism before the body is stripped of fat, dead and dying cells and is forced to dissolve healthy cells for calories. This is the point of starvation. If you are fasting and still have fat on your body, you have a long way to go.

Fasting and Protein Deficiency
A person fasting 40 days on water will not suffer a deficiency of protein, vitamins, minerals or essential fatty acids. In the breakdown of unhealthy cells, all essential substances, which are mostly protein, are reused and conserved in a most extraordinary manner. Protein needs are also greatly diminished during a fast.


There is an unwarranted fear of fasting that strength diminishes from the catabolism of proteins from muscle fibers. Fasting will strip only muscle cells that are dead, dying or diseased. Even during long fasts, the number of muscle fibers remains the same. Although the healthy cells may be reduced in size and strength for a time, they remain perfectly sound.


In December 1903, under the supervision of Mr. Macfadden, eight athletes entered an athletic contest in Madison Square Gardens. Amazingly, all were on the seventh day of water fasting. Joseph H. Waltering, one of the eight, won both the 50-yard dash and the 220-yard run. Another member of the eight, Gilman Low, won first prize in the strength contests.


The following day, on the eighth day of his fast, in front of 16,000 well-fed spectators munching on popcorn and peanuts, he established nine world records for strength and endurance that would stand for years. Even more astonishing are the inspirational stories in the Fasting Testimonies chapter provided at the conclusion of this book.

Accounts of parents spending the whole day, cleaning house, doing laundry and feeding hungry children while fasting! Dr. Ehret, an avid faster, walked for ten days through the mountains fasting on water. Bragg, another fasting enthusiast, walked 30 miles across Death Valley, in July, during a fast. It was an invigorating walk for Bragg, but for the ten athletic college students who went with him through the blistering heat, it was an experience they never forget. Enjoying his first stroll so much, Bragg decided to hike another 30 miles the next day. Not bad for a great-grandfather!


Your first fast will cause weakness in the early stages. Regretfully, when this symptom appears, many stop fasting due to a lack of knowledge or understanding that this weakness is not detrimental. They are unsuccessful in breaking through to the other side and encountering the abundant energy of juice fasting. It takes about 10 days for a weightlifter or athlete to get back to full muscular strength after a long fast. After that, performance will improve.


Balanced Approach to Fasting
After my first 30-day juice fast, I was hooked and did two more 30-day fasts consecutively, eating for 10 days in between. From drug addiction to being a health zealot was a definite improvement, but my approach remained the same. Fasting and eating healthy became my new obsession. Eating a cookie brought days of guilt and shame. My thoughts dwelled on the horror of all the deadly toxins I had just injected into my bloodstream. I had to be in the gym 5 days a week. I was totally focused on my body and food. It was all I talked about and it irritated people. Now, fasting is just part of my life and eating healthy is normal. I don’t talk about the subject unless I have to. When I came to be at peace, I became balanced.


Obsession or being fanatical comes from fear of being out of control. It is a security blanket that we hang onto; something that we can control, but obsession stops us from enjoying life.

Obsession with health takes all the fun out of it. It is like going on a vacation and worrying about every detail. The trip becomes a nightmare. It is all the little worries and fear that take the joy out of the fasting journey. Am I drinking too much juice? Will adding mashed banana slow detoxification? How quickly will I lose weight? Can I exercise while fasting? Will loss of weight cause flabby skin? Does fasting hurt the liver? Why do I feel dizzy?


Many questions are answered in the Commonly Asked Questions chapter. Questions are important and understanding brings comfort, but fasting is a personal journey and each fast is a different journey. There will always be the unexpected, for fasting is as mysterious as the human soul. It may be hard to let go and just enjoy the journey but that is the best way to fast.

Coconut oil consists almost entirely of saturated fat -- about 92% -- which sounds pretty bad on the surface. But not all saturated fats are created equal. As the old saying goes, "some are more equal than others". Coconut oil actually helps you lose weight and stay healthy in ways that no other fat can match. In particular, note that:

· Coconut oil is good for cooking, because saturated fat is not harmed by heat -- unlike unsaturated oils.
· Coconut oil does not contain the trans fats that produce insulin-resistance, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.
· Coconut oil does not contain the oxidized cholesterol (produced by hydrogenation and high-heat processing) that are responsible for heart disease and stroke.
· Coconut oil consists primarily of medium-chain fatty acids, which are metabolized very differently, so they're burned as fuel rather than stored as fat.
· Perhaps even more importantly, medium-chain fatty acids are potent anti-microbial agents.
· Coconut oil was used in food products for centuries. It was only replaced by partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (most often by hydrogenated soybean oil) in recent decades, during which time levels of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity have reached epidemic proportions.
Notes:
· Coconut oil and fractionated palm kernel oil are very similar, and come from different parts of the same plant. They are stable at room temperature, so they don't need to be refrigerated.
· Throughout this article, "coconut oil" means virgin coconut oil -- oil that has not been refined, bleached, or deodorized. Although none of that processing is necessary, some manufacturers do it anyway, which produces the same problems as those associated with hydrogenated oils. (The 8% of unsaturated fats that coconut oil contains can be damaged by such high-heat processing.) So when you shop, look for virgin coconut oil -- oil that isn't bleached, refined, or deodorized.
It Melts In Your Hand


Coconut oil becomes a liquid at 76-degrees Fahrenheit. So on a warm day, it's liquid in the jar. On cool days, however, it's a white solid. When it's solid, it looks like one of those hard-to-digest fats that might clog up your arteries and end up around your middle.



But the difference becomes apparent when you pick up a little and rub it between your fingers. The fat "solid" turns into an oily liquid almost immediately. That reaction hints at how quickly it metabolizes -- how quickly it breaks down to produce energy in your even warmer interior.
It turns out that coconut oil is so effective at providing energy and at protecting the body from disease-causing microbes that it's used in baby formulas, intravenous fluids, and sports endurance snacks. Those uses, along with centuries of use by healthy indigenous cultures, are major clues as to just how good it is for you.


The Miracle Diet Pill
Coconut oil is metabolized from other fats. It breaks down quickly and is burned for fuel long before it can be stored as fat. That process makes all the difference in the world, not only to your weight. Tends to be Burned, Rather than Stored When we think about saturated fat, we generally think of the 18-carbon long-chain fatty acids found in meat and dairy products. But medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) are different. They contain 8, 10, or 12 carbons, and they are metabolized in radically different ways. Approximately 64% of coconut oil consists of medium chain fatty acids, so the difference is important.


Since MCFAs are shorter, they contain less energy. So instead of containing 9 calories per gram like longer saturated fats, they contain a little over 6 calories per gram. That's a bargain, right there. For the same satisfying taste, you save 1/3 the calories over meat and dairy products.
But that's just the beginning, because the medium-chain fatty acids tend to be converted into energy, rather than stored as fat. To understand how, see the sidebar, What Happens to Fat. (Or skip it to save yourself the gory details.)

What Happens to Fat
A large portion of the medium-chain fats are broken down by saliva. They are then packed off to the liver by way of the portal vein the moment they arrive in the upper intestine. Many of the free fatty acids are then converted into energy packets called Acetyl-CoA (Acetylcoenzyme A) in the liver and in the cells. (Converting those free fatty acids into energy packets is actually slightly simpler the conversion of glucose![Guyton, 22]) Mitochondria in the cells then convert those packets into energy.


Long-chain saturated fats, on the other hand, move into the intestines, where they are slowly broken down, absorbed, and synthesized into triglycerides (3-part fats). The triglycerides are then passed to the lymph system. From there, they move to the heart and are distributed throughout the body.[Guyton, 20, 842-843]



Of course, the liver synthesizes triglycerides as well, along with the phospholipids that are a necessary part of cell membranes.[Guyton, 885] But since coconut oil contains mostly medium-chain fats, the synthesized triglycerides are shorter -- that's why that have a little over 6 calories per gram, instead of 9 calories per gram like other fats. (Actually, medium-chain fats contain 6.8 calories per gram. But I think of it as "a little over 6" to simplify the math.)
However they are created, some triglycerides (generally too many!) go to the fat cells, where they are stored. Some go to internal cells, where they are used for energy. Others go to surface cells where they are emitted as skin oil and other forms of sebum (for example, in the sinuses). And some, when they return to the liver, are converted into phospholipids, lipoproteins, cholesterol, and Acetyl-CoA, all of which are necessary for your body to function.



When the medium-chain fats that aren't immediately used for energy are stored as fat, they only contain 2/3 the energy of the long-chain variety -- so when they're burned, they burn more quickly. You'll learn more about that beneficial side effect in a moment.

Meanwhile, the medium-chain fats that go to the surface cells in the skin, sinuses, digestive tract, and vaginal tract create an extremely potent defensive barrier against microbial invaders. You'll see how that process works later on.

The bottom line with respect to fat metabolism is that long-chain fats take longer to digest, and they tend to be stored as that "stubborn fat" you can't get rid of. Medium-chain fats, on the other hand, are immediately broken down into fatty acids, and tend to be burned for energy.
Those who combat fatigue on a daily basis may therefore notice an increase in body temperature (and blood pressure) when they consume coconut oil. It's the result of the increased metabolic rate as the medium-chain fatty acids are burned. Since you're more energetic, you feel more like working and exercising, which burns even more fat.


Notes:
· If are under treatment for hypertension (high blood pressure), you should use coconut oil sparingly -- and you may want to discuss it with your doctor first.
· The increased endurance and energy levels that MCFAs provide is the reason that coconut oil is included in sports snacks. It's most effective over the long term, however, as your body's hormones adapt to use the free fatty acids as an energy supply. So a single serving won't do much good, but a steady supply will do wonders.


· Sports drinks often contain medium-chain triglycerides in the form of MCT. They're effective for generating energy, but they contain only 2 of the 3 medium-chain fats. The one they're missing is the critical medium-chain fatty acid for health -- lauric acid. You'll learn more about lauric acid in a moment. For now, the take-home message is that coconut oil in a sports drink is vastly superior to MCT.


Burns Stored Fat, Too
Replacing other fats with coconut oil means that the rate at which your body stores fat slows down, because more of your dietary fat is metabolized for energy. But beyond that, coconut oil actually increases the rate at which you burn stored fat, even beyond the extra fat you burn simply because you exercise more and work harder.
As you grow accustomed to your new energy levels, you'll tend to eat less sugary and starchy foods, because you don't have as much need for them. It's not something you'll have to try to do, either. Your body will make the adaptation naturally. (For an example, see the sidebar, How Your Appetite Can Change.)

How Your Appetite Can Change
Once upon a time, I fell into the habit of running every day -- generally for half an hour, often for an hour or more. After two months of that, I walked into my regular steak house, and I vividly remember passing the salad bar and salivating at all those luscious red and green vegetables. Then I walked up to the grill, where the steaks and baked potatoes, previously so enticing, no held no interest for me at all. The smells weren't even exciting! I simply could not wait to get through the line and get to the salad bar.


I relate that story, because it showed me in clear detail how the body's desire for food -- and the foods it has an appetite for -- result from what we're doing and what we're eating. If we exercise a lot and eat decent foods, the appetite doesn't just go down, it changes to prefer things that are healthy.


In my case, my diet hadn't changed during the previous two months. I had been eating my normal assortment of salads, meat, potatoes, and cookies, with the occasional vegetable thrown in. Somehow, my body knew which of those foods it really needed, and it took control of my taste buds to get them!


The Standard American Diet (SAD) generally defeats the body's wisdom, because the nutrients it needs are nowhere to be found. So the body is just generally hungry for anything and everything it can find, in hopes of finding the nutrients it needs. When you give it the right stuff, it will quickly adapt and make it your favorite food.


When you eat less sugar and starch -- especially refined starch like white flour and white rice -- you'll have less glucose (blood sugar) in your blood stream. The brain runs on glucose exclusively (except when fasting), but the rest of your cells will tend to alter their hormonal balance to metabolize the additional fatty acids that are arriving for energy, instead of sugar.


The lack of glucose, in turn, causes fat cells to release fatty acids instead of storing them. It's an interesting mechanism. When sugar is present in the blood, fat cells tend to store fat. But when it's absent, fat cells tend to release fat. They're simply optimizing things in attempt to keep your energy levels constant. The fats are then burned, in a process known as hydrolysis.
Note: The prefix hydro- means "water". The process requires water, so be sure to drink plenty of it.


So one interesting and useful effect of replacing other fats in your diet with coconut oil, over time, is to increase the amount of fat that is released as result of the lowered glucose levels -- even though your energy level is still high from the medium chain fatty acids you're burning for energy. In essence, your body is reacting to the low-sugar state that triggers it to burn fat, only you aren't experiencing the fatigue and hunger you normally associate with low blood sugar.
But wait. There's more!


When you've been consuming coconut oil for a while, most of the fat you've stored only contains 2/3 the energy of long-chain fats, because you've been storing medium-chain triglycerides. So whenever your body goes into fat-burning mode as a result of exercise or waiting to eat, it has to burn 1/3 more stored fat to deliver the same amount of energy! It's like getting 60 minutes of exercise for the price of only 40 -- another great bargain.


The process might take less time, than you think, too. Fat stores are actually dynamic. Fat doesn't just sit there like a lump. Every day, your body releases the fatty acids it contains and replaces it with new fatty acids it receives. So the fat in your body actually turns over every 2-3 weeks!


Of course, most of us tend to keep putting on a little more than we're taking off, but that has a lot more to do with the partially hydrogenated soybean oils in our diet than it has to do with saturated fat. Just eliminating the trans fats tends to stabilize your weight. But when the majority of your fat comes from coconut oil, your body will tend to take off more than it puts on.
The process will be slow at first, because most of your stored fat will probably be of the long-chain variety (and worse, ugly trans fats). But it will speed up over time, as more and more of your stored fat becomes medium-chain triglycerides. People have reported losing 20 lbs. in 6 months without making any other changes in their diet or exercise regimen. With a healthy diet and exercise, of course, your changes will come that much faster.


Doesn't Interfere with Thyroid Function (unlike soybean oil)
The origins of the American obesity epidemic can be traced to the 1970's when a concerted campaign against "harmful tropical oils" by the American Soybean Association led to the elimination of coconut oil in virtually all commercial cooking.


The coconut oil was in the main replaced by partially hydrogenated oil, which interferes with insulin activity and causes other health problems but "partially hydrogenated oil" on a food label generally means soybean oil, and soybean oil adds an additional problem of its own -- it inhibits the thyroid's ability to produce the hormones we need to burn fat, generate energy, and carry on the processes of life.


When the thyroid isn't operating properly, your body's metabolism is lowered, so you store fat instead of burning it. And you don't want to exercise, because you don't have the energy. So you just naturally gain weight.

"People with rheumatoid arthritis should include in their daily diets juices high in the anti-inflammatory nutrients," said Cherie Calbom, M.S. Calbom is a certified nutritionist in Kirkland, Washington, and co-author of "Juicing for Life." Calbom adds that parsley, broccoli, and spinach can assist in the treatment of arthritis, since these contain beta-carotene, along with carrots, apples, and ginger, all of which contain copper. She also promotes the drinking of pineapple juice, since it is the only source of the strong anti-inflammatory enzyme bromelain.


Bromelain helps the body breakdown protein. Incomplete protein break down (i.e. poor digestion) is a condition implicated in arthritis. Bromelain also helps break down plaque and fatty tissue deposits that can clog arteries. It also assists in the natural healing of bruises and minor abrasions.

However, Stengler suggests that fish oil be used only as one component of a complete arthritis treatment.


Some schools of thought rely on acupuncture to assist in dealing with arthritis pain. Acupuncture is based on an ancient Chinese philosophy that the body has an energy called qi, pronounced "chee." Application of needles to certain points can restore the flow of qi along invisible channels called meridians.
